The flood situation in Bayelsa State seems to be getting worse as the water level keep rising, dislodging many from their homes. A walk down the city of Yenagoa and its environment, shows people relocating to safer ground. Report making the rounds on social media indicates that deaths have also been recorded.
A Facebook user posted: "A 16-year-old boy, identified as Temedi Yerimene, has been reportedly killed by the surging flood at Igbogene community in Yenagoa Local Government Area of Bayelsa State and his corpse was dragged into a deep canal near the entrance of the state capital.
After 2 days his body is yet to be found, happened close to the state ecumenical centre."
Unconfirmed sources indicate that deaths have also been recorded in Akenfa, Etegwe and Opolo.
The hardship the flood is causing families is unimaginable and there is a call for the State Government to give civil servants a break to enable them grapple with the situation. Already, schools in the state are on a six weeks flood break; netizens opine that the gesture should be extended to workers.
